What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is the result of the body's biggest nerve responding to pressure, injury or muscle imbalance. The sciatic nerve runs from the spinal cord through the buttocks, splits off into branches in both hips, down through the legs and finally to the feet. Piriformis Syndrome - The piriformis muscle is a flat, pear-shaped muscle within the pelvis and assists in lateral rotation of the hip. It's one of the major muscles used in walking. As you walk it shifts weight to the opposite side of the foot and keeps your body balanced.

Depending upon where the sciatic nerve runs through your hip, an imbalanced piriformis can shift its position enough to bring pressure to the sciatic nerve as it passes through the area. Typically the nerve passes under the piriformis muscle.
