What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is the result of the body's biggest nerve responding to pressure, injury or muscle imbalance. The sciatic nerve runs from the spinal cord through the buttocks, splits off into branches in both hips, down through the legs and finally to the feet. This major nerve is responsible for carrying signals back and forth from the brain to most of the lower leg's muscles and feet.

Injury and irritation to the nerve can be from decreased shock absorption capabilities in the spinal cord due to age, incorrect posture or repetitive heavy lifting without proper support. It can also be present as a complication of diabetes or from a traumatic accident. It's also common in athlete's who run or depend upon the upper leg muscle group. Typically the symptoms of sciatica affect only one side of the body and, depending upon the location of the disturbance to the nerve, can range from a localized pain to radiating down the spine to the feet and toes.

Sciatic Conditions

Piriformis Syndrome - The piriformis muscle is a flat, pear-shaped muscle within the pelvis and assists in lateral rotation of the hip. It's one of the major muscles used in walking. As you walk it shifts weight to the opposite side of the foot and keeps your body balanced.

Depending upon where the sciatic nerve runs through your hip, an imbalanced piriformis can shift its position enough to bring pressure to the sciatic nerve as it passes through the area. Typically the nerve passes under the piriformis muscle. Fifteen percent of the population is actually at risk due to the proximity of the sciatic nerve passing directly through the piriformis muscle.

Radiculopathy or Herniated Disc - When a disc bulges out of the normal spinal alignment it's actually the liquid center creating the bulge and 'herniated'. This displacement causes inflammation and swelling pressure on the sciatic nerve. The compression can inflame the nerve, restrict the blood flow and cause deterioration. If left untreated, the nerve itself can be partly or wholly destroyed.

Spinal Stenosis - The lumbar (lower) or cervical (neck region) sections of the spine can have a narrowing of the spinal canal called spinal stenosis. This causes constriction of the nerve and results in irritation and swelling.

Isthmic Spondylolisthesis - A disk can sometimes slip or move within the spine. While not as severe a condition as a herniated disk, it can still pinch the nerve and cause problems. However, it's not uncommon for people to have this condition and not have any symptoms or pain.
